Oakland Supercross
Although we’ve seen three different Lites winners in as many races, the one constant has come from Eli Tomac, who has set the fastest lap in all three races. In Los Angeles, Tomac’s fast time of 53.915 was even quicker than the fastest 450 lap of 54.341, which was set by Ryan Villopoto. Look for Tomac to be laying down more scorching laps this weekend.
Billy Laninovich has returned to supercross this year, and so far his results have been steadily improving. Laninovich took fourteenth at A1, twelfth in Phoenix, and tenth in L.A.. These results aren’t a complete shocker; Laninovich was once a podium threat every time he lined up, and even won a Lites main in San Francisco in 2005. What kind of results will Laninovich pull this weekend?
Stewart’s Turn?
So far, James Stewart has watched while one by one, his main competitors have all taken race wins. Villopoto won the opener, Ryan Dungey took Phoenix, and Chad Reed ran away with it in Dodger Stadium. Despite a small crash, Stewart recorded his best finish of the season last week when he crossed the line in third place. If Stewart can keep it on two wheels tomorrow night, look for him to challenge for his first win of the year.
Rookie Move
Gavin Faith made his professional AMA supercross debut last week as a replacement rider with the GEICO Honda squad, and while his eighteenth place finish probably didn’t turn any heads, it’s still worthy of mention. Even after the threat of rain cut practice down to a single session, Faith went out and made the main in his first attempt ever. Now that Faith has some experience under his belt, how will the rookie from Fort Dodge, Iowa, do in Oakland?
Do or Die
It can be very difficult to overcome a disastrous race, especially in a short series. After experiencing poor results last week, championship hopes for Marvin Musquin (nineteenth) and Cole Seely (fifteenth) aren’t looking very bright, and both riders are facing must win situations if they want to keep their title chases alive. Will Musquin and Seely rebound in Oakland, or will their championship flames be extinguished?
Life’s a Beach
The soil in Oakland is extremely sandy, and is unlike any of the racing surfaces we’ve seen so far this year. Sand tracks wear in differently, get rough quickly, and require a completely different type of bike setup. Sand also makes for some fierce roost, which is sure to provide vision problems for riders who run out of tearoffs.
Equal Opportunity
A quick look at this week’s Bench Racing Ammo reveals just how much talent exists in both classes. So far, six races have produced six different winners. With guys like James Stewart, Jake Weimer, Ryan Sipes, Tyla Rattray, Marvin Musquin and Zack Osborne still chasing their first win of the season, Oakland has the potential to keep the new-winner streak alive.
Mad Max
Max Anstie didn’t have the best showing at A1 (sixteenth), but since then, his results have improved, with a ninth in Phoenix and a sixth in Dodger Stadium. Will the British rider’s upward trend continue Saturday night?
The Replacements
With all of the injuries taking place, we’re going to start seeing a wave of new or replacement riders in the pits. Last week it was Gavin Faith with the GEICO Honda squad. This week we’ll see Matt Goerke joining the BTOSports.com/Butler Brothers MX team, Cody Mackie to fill in for Josh Grant at DNA / Jeff Ward Racing, and Bobby Kiniry aboard a Star Valli Motorsports 450.

Villopoto Victorious at Monster Energy Supercross’ Anaheim Opener
Seely Opens Western Regional Supercross Lites Championship with Dominant Win
ANAHEIM, Calif. (January 7, 2012) – Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto, of Poulsbo, Wash., won the Anaheim opener of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, before a sold-out crowd of 45,050 fans at Angel Stadium. Troy Less Designs/Lucas Oil/Honda’s Cole Seely, of Murrieta, Calif., dominated the opening race of the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class race en route to victory.
Villopoto, the defending class champion, opened the Supercross Class main event with the Nuclear Cowboyz® Holeshot with Dodge/Sycuan Casino/Hart and Huntington/Bel-Ray Racing’s Ivan Tedesco, of Marietta, Calif., and TwoTwo Motorsports/Bel-Ray/Honda’s Chad Reed, of Dade City, Fla., following in second and third, respectively. Red Bull/KTM’s Ryan Dungey, of Belle Plaine, Minn., shot past Tedesco on the second lap as Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX’s James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., made up for a mid-pack start to secure fourth place.
While riding in third place, Dungey crashed and gave Stewart third place, but on lap 11, Dungey swung back around Stewart. Stewart once again found his way around Dungey on lap 14 before crashing on the following lap. Villopoto cruised to his second consecutive Anaheim opener win with a 12.2-second victory. Reed finished second and Dungey finished third.
“Villopoto made us look silly out here tonight,” said Reed. “I am just happy to get second place tonight in this field of riders.”
“It was a phenomenal night for me,” said Villopoto. “I didn’t have the heat race I wanted, so I didn’t have a great gate pick. Once I was out front I wanted to lay down fast laps and make no mistakes. I did make one small one, but overall, it was a great race for me.”
As the gates dropped on the Western Regional Supercross Lites Class, Motoconcepts Suzuki’s Vince Friese, Cape Girardeau, Mo., won the Nuclear Cowboyz Holeshot but was quickly passed by Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki’s Tyla Rattray, of Wildomar, Calif. The following lap Dean Wilson, of Menifee, Calif., pushed his Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki past Rattray.
Seely secured the lead on lap 2 and rode to the third win of his career and sits as the class’ points leader. On the last lap, GEICO Honda’s Eli Tomac, of Cortez, Colo., passed Wilson, who subsequently crashed, losing several positions before returning to racing.
“I couldn’t think of a better way to start the season,” said Seely. “To get a win here tonight in front of my family and friends is huge. I learned last year that consistency is key, and I hope to be on the podium at every race.”

James Stewart AMA Spring Championship
Freestone County Raceway, LLC, promoter of the AMA Spring Championship, is pleased to announce a partnership with James Stewart Entertainment (JSE) to form the James Stewart AMA Spring Championship at Freestone Raceway in Wortham, Texas from February 28 through March 3, 2012.
James will be on hand for the official track walk on Monday, February 27th, and riders will have several chances to speak and listen to one of the fastest motocross riders to ever throw a leg over a motorcycle. James will have a couple other special surprises, but one of the greatest will be for each champion of all 49 classes; James is inviting each champion to come and train with him at his compound in Florida in the fall.
"Each year for the last 15 years, amateur racers from around the country and the world have come to Texas to kick off the amateur racing season in the United States," said Tom Shields, Marketing Director of Freestone. "The AMA Spring Championship is in its second year and with the addition to having James giving back in this manner makes him an even greater ambassador to our sport."
"Having my name attached to an event such as the AMA Spring Championship is amazing" said Stewart. "I always wanted to be a bigger part of the motocross industry and I think this is taking amateur racing to a new level. I loved competing in amateur races, so my heart has always been with the younger generation coming up because they are the future of our sport." James added "To be there and to be a part of that younger generation and to know one day these future champions are going to say that they had to go through the James Stewart AMA Spring Championship is a true honor. I look for this just to be the start of many great things with my relationship to this event and I know it will give me goose bumps to look up and see 'James Stewart AMA Spring Championship' as I drive into the track."
Online registration is now open for the Spring Championship. For more information about the James Stewart AMA Spring Championship at Freestone Raceway, go to www.FreestoneMX.com. For more information on James Stewart, visit www.js7.com.

“The Ponca City Grand National Championship Motocross is moving to a bigger, better and a more convenient location” announced Ron Henricksen, President of the NMA. The OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX, located in Norman Oklahoma, has been designated as the new home of the Grand Nationals. Next year’s event will be held July 22 - 28, 2012 at this new location. After a recent trip to Oklahoma and seeing this great facility and meeting with the enthusiastic property owners the decision was made to select this new location.
The OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX has all new 50 amp electrical hook-ups, plenty of pit parking and a 100% viewable track. A national Go-Kart facility on the property with kart rentals will be available during the Grand Nationals.
The city of Norman offers many conveniences to the racer families including 400 restaurants, major shopping malls and stores and excellent hotel accommodations. Sooner Legends Inn and Suites in Norman, Oklahoma will be Hotel Race Headquarters and they are offering special rates for racers during the Grand Nationals.
The new location will make travel for the racers much more convenient. The OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX is located on I-35 and is close to Will Rogers World Airport in Oklahoma City. It will be closer for those traveling to Tennessee for the next major motocross event the following week.
The previous location in Ponca City was discovered by the NMA with the first NMA Ponca City Grand National Championship held there 33 years ago. At that time the city owned property was a riding area for local kids. The improvements to the property over the years are a result of many NMA man hours and dollars which transformed it into a nationally known motocross facility. The NMA Grand National Championship Motocross event at Ponca City has resulted in millions of dollars to Ponca City and their local charities.
Qualifying races for the 2012 Grand Nationals are currently being scheduled in the 40 regions across the country. The dates and locations of the qualifiers can be found at www.nmamx.com. The NMA and the OKLAHOMA MOTORSPORTS COMPLEX look forward to presenting a great 37th Annual Grand National Championship Motocross at the new location.

2012 Monster Energy Supercross Season Preview to Air on CBS Sports Christmas Day
AURORA, Ill. (December 13, 2011) – Feld Motor Sports® announced today that CBS Sports will showcase the highly anticipated Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship, preview show Sunday, December 25 at 2:00 p.m. ET. The one-hour season preview show will foreshadow what’s to be expected when the gates drop on the 2012 Monster Energy Supercross Championship from Angel Stadium in Anaheim, Calif. January 7.
The depth of talent in this year’s field is the deepest the sport has ever seen as it enters its 37th season. Nine different riders – Chad Reed, Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Trey Canard, Kevin Windham, Josh Hill, Josh Grant and Davi Millsaps – have earned Supercross Class wins during their careers. Among them, Stewart, Reed, Dungey and Villopoto have captured the coveted Supercross Class championship.
CBS Sports will give an insider’s perspective on the multi-faceted season that lies ahead and provide an update on the developments of Stewart and Dungey’s camps as the season draws near. Once the season gets underway, CBS Sports will provide a Monster Energy Supercross special on February 26 at Noon ET and a Monster Energy Supercross season recap show on May 6 at Noon ET.
“Network coverage on CBS Sports is the perfect platform to showcase the highly anticipated 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross, an FIM World Championship,” said Charlie Mancuso, president, Feld Motor Sports.
Beyond the competition, 2012 is being tabbed as a significant season of change for many of the sport’s biggest names. Most notably are the respective moves of both Stewart and Dungey. After three years with San Manuel Yamaha, Stewart made a high-profile move to Joe Gibbs Racing and the Toyota/Yamaha/JGRMX stable, while Dungey will compete professionally on a machine other than Suzuki for the first time in his young career, rejoining his mentor and team manager Roger DeCoster at Red Bull KTM.

The collection rebels against mundane products as it represents a new look, fit and direction with no limitations. The design is specifically for motocross athletes and enthusiasts alike.
When launching two months ago, Bulldog Racing had one goal in mind; to deliver quality-manufactured goods for the motocross market. “We have taken everything that has traditionally bothered consumers about tee shirts, and clothing in general and solved the issues,” says CEO and Owner Dave Granade. “Our materials are softer with more vibrant colors, we have screened in labels to avoid neck itch and we are proud to say our apparel is ready to wear right out of the box with no break-in required.”
Since their launch, Bulldog Racing has been pursuing professional and amateur athletes to represent their brand. “It’s our goal to support athletes of all levels and offer them a sponsorship unlike any other. Bulldog Racing will be there whether it’s helping athletes get the media coverage they deserve or just being there for their support,”. “Constant communication to develop a personal relationship with each and every athlete is our goal. Sure I can be the sponsor that just sends an athlete a box of goodies and tells them to rock the brand, but that’s not how Bulldog Racing works. I want to build relationships and grow with my athletes.” Bulldog Racing plans to continue growing and become a competitive top contender in the motocross clothing and apparel industry.

Darryn Durham Injury Update
CORONA, Calif. - Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider Darryn Durham sustained a wrist injury following a practice crash Friday at the Kawasaki test track. The newest Pro Circuit Race Team member was taken to the hospital immediately following the accident, where the doctor informed him he had a slight fracture of the wrist.
The Pennsylvania native had surgery that night to insert a screw in his wrist, which should help speed up the recovery process. Expected to be in a cast for four weeks, Durham is optimistic he will be ready in time for the start of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season.
“Everything is going good,” Durham said recently. “It is just a minor set back, but I will be ready for the season at the beginning of January.”
Team owner Mitch Payton added, “It’s unfortunate. Darryn was looking good on the bike. With time and through rehabilitation, we hope he can get back on the bike soon.”
The Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki team starts the season just after the New Year, with the opening round of the AMA Supercross Championship from Anaheim’s Angel Stadium on Saturday, January 7.
Reed Cements Future for TwoTwo Motorsports
CALIFORNIA: TwoTwo Motorsports Chad Reed has hit the ground running since returning to the USA, today announcing one of the most important partnerships of his career.
Just hours after arriving in California, Reed put pen to paper, cementing his team’s future, with increased support from American Honda for 2012 and beyond.
The Australian, who started TwoTwo Motorsports from scratch just 12 months ago is excited to be expanding his relationship with American Honda and welcomed the consistency that would come from multiple years with the manufacturer.
TwoTwo Motorsports will now have access to a myriad of resources, from design to manufacturing, with the team to be housed at American Honda’s Californian Racing facility, directly next door to the Factory Motocross team.
"In some ways this feels like redemption,” Reed said. “In the beginning the support from American Honda was limited, which was completely understandable given we were a new team without any runs on the board.”
“Our new relationship with American Honda holds so much potential and for me it is a money can’t buy partnership to be associated with a manufacturer that is as equally committed to winning as we are.”
Never before has a rider started a team with such success and American Honda’s multi year commitment to the team show they have confidence that the teams success will continue.
“We are very excited to have TwoTwo Motorsports continue with Honda for 2012 and 2013,” said American Honda Race Team Director Ray Conway.
“Chad enjoyed a tremendous level of success in 2011, his first year ever on Honda CFR450R racing machines.”
“We are all anticipating that his level of success will only increase during the coming year as he and his team continue to build on the great foundation they’ve already established,” Conway continued.
Whilst fans and industry insiders were expecting the announcement of a second rider Reed opted to recruit two key personnel to TwoTwo Motorsports for 2012.
Renowned motorcycle engineer Mike Gosselaar has joined the team as Technical Director and Sergio Avento has taken up the role of Research and Development Manager.
"As a rider, I am responsible for my own performance and I expect to go out there and win, anything else is second best,” Reed continued.
“With a team situation there are so many other things that can affect an outcome, but it was the sheer hard work and dedication of my crew this year that ensured none of those factors influenced our performance.”
“They worked extremely hard 24/7 to create a dynamic within the team that was second to none in the championship. It is the sort of dynamic you normally see within a team that has worked together for years.”
“Recruiting Goose & Sergio will further strengthen that dynamic and provide the additional resources we need to continue building a solid infrastructure around the team,” Reed said.
TwoTwo Motorsports Team Manager Dave Osterman echoed Reed’s sentiments.
“We had a dream year and the dream continues into 2012 & beyond,” Osterman stated.
“I am pleased to say that with our new long term commitment from American Honda coupled with our growing infrastructure Chad Reed & TwoTwo Motorsports will continue to be Championship contenders.”
After working with Reed in 2009 Gosselaar said he was looking forward to teaming up with the Australian again.
“I'm grateful for the opportunity to join TwoTwo Motorsports,” Gosselaar said. “It's a great feeling to be part of this program knowing we're growing into becoming one of the top premier teams.”
“It's also awesome to be back working with American Honda again and great to be supported 100% by them. Bring on 2012.”
Reed will spend the coming months in California testing with his TwoTwo Motorsports team as they prepare for the opening round of the 2012 Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championship, which will be held at Anaheim’s Angel Stadium on Saturday January 7, 2012.
